The objective of this class is to familiarize students with the fundamental concepts and methods used in public international law. It will address topics such as state sovereignty, statehood and recognition, the role of non-state actors, the regulation of the use of armed force in international relations, state and individual criminal responsibility, the law of armed conflict, the protection of human rights, the United Nations and the role and power of the Security Council, settlement of disputes at the International Court of Justice and other international courts and tribunals. Students will thus deepen their understanding of the complex regulatory framework that applies in international affairs and permeates contemporary global politics.
