In its scale and duration, the conflict that has been tearing Afghanistan apart is one of the gravest humanitarian disasters of these last decades. Afghanistan may be poor and somewhat marginal, but its crisis of state and society has affected the entire world. Since the US-led military intervention and the fall of the Taliban in late 2001, Afghanistan has experienced dramatic changes. After an early period of hope, the democratization process carried out under the international community’s guidance failed to prevent further deterioration of the situation on ground, which lead to the return to power of the Taliban in summer 2021. Afghanistan is a key site to understand global humanitarian processes and new forms of governance.
